RSD 2024: What To Know

On Saturday, April 20th, one of the biggest days in music collecting will occur: Record Store Day 2024. The bi-annual shopping event boasts hundreds of exclusive record titles spread amongst local, independently owned record stores across the US (and a few other countries). The day itself holds great importance in the music world, alongside some never-seen-before features this year!

In a new age of constantly evolving technology, it seems as though physically collecting music has become obsolete in comparison to online streaming like Spotify or Apple Music, and in turn- it has become more common for those who do collect music physically to turn to shopping online where there are more options and an endless range of vinyl which has lead to the decline of record stores in America, with the rate of closings being about 6.2% yearly. These numbers are rather staggering which only emphasizes the importance of Record Store Day.

The main purpose of Record Store Day is to unite everyone in the record-collecting community, the music fans, record store staff, and artists all together under a united front. Attending an RSD is such a unique experience, many stores will bring local music to play or host special events in celebration of the day, some artists even boast signings like Briston Maroney is doing a signing at the Monster Music & Movies Store in Charleston, NC and in Charlotte, NC at Lunchbox Records, a signing is happening with FETCHIN BONES, and there are dozens of other signings happening nationwide. These unique experiences are traditionally free or included with the experience of Record Store Day!

It also goes without saying how important it is to shop locally in support of your favorite record stores because without it a piece of music would simply be lifeless without it.
