Indigo De Souza Rocks Second Sold Out Night At Cat’s Cradle

On 05/30/2023, Indigo De Souza played her second sold-out show at Cat’s Cradle in Carborro, NC. Indigo De Souza would go on to perform a riveting show that the iconic Cat’s Cradle is sure never to forget.

The show was opened by the Durham-based musician Justin Morris who plays under the stage named Sluice. Opening for a sold-out show must be daunting, but Sluice pursued it with ease. Entering the stage to a background of spoken word intros (similar to TV Girl’s utilization of spoken word, Morris and his band came and rocked the stage. With a wide array of instruments straying away from the traditional instrumental setup, the band used their Appalachian roots, utilizing violin and recorder elements to perform a genuinely magnificent set. With intense drum solos that stole the show, introspective lyricism, and a certain familiarity to their set- the band was right at home at Cat’s Cradle. They played a handful of songs off their new album Radial Gate and even new, unreleased songs like ‘Ratchet Strap.’ The band didn’t come alone either; they arrived with a handful of hometown friends who lovingly sang throughout the show, shouting their favorite lyrics like the notable “f*ck the government” line from his song ‘Mill.’ The band carried an energy that transcended the entire venue preparing the crowd for the rollercoaster ahead of them.

Sluice released their album Radial Gate this past March and will wrap up opening with Indigo De Souza tomorrow, 06/03, at The Orange Peel in Asheville. They have other notable shows coming up; they will be playing at the coveted Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh this September and will also be opening a handful of shows for Angel Olsen this December.

Indigo De Souza wasn’t planning to have two nights at Cat’s Cradle, but after the immediate success of the first night, it was apparent another night needed to be added to the tour. Luckily she did because that additional night sold out with quick success once again.

Indigo De Souza is an Asheville-based artist who began making music at the young age of 9. Since then, she’s amassed quite the discography, most notably her most recent album, All Of This Will End, which came out at the end of April. The album contains hits like ‘Younger and Dumber’ and ‘Losing.’

The show was incredibly electric and blew any expectations out of the water. As De Souza walked onto the stage to an eclectic rap song, quickly giving the disclaimer that that song would be nothing like the set that followed. The setlist took the crowd on a journey throughout her discography, playing songs from many of her projects. She obviously focused on her newest album, but a wide variety was still present. She even took the request of a fan (upon approval of band member Dexter Webb) to play the indulgent ‘Pretty Pictures.’ Indigo was truly one of the sweetest souls while alive. She wore a tee that read “It’s my Barbie birthday” and a plaid skirt paired with knee-high socks and sneakers. She interacted sweetly with the crowd and gave advice- even referencing songs she’s adored recently. She helped foster an environment for fans to be themselves- while encouraging it in-between songs. Fans could see her apparent joy and passion for her music as she played the set. Even while playing painfully intimate songs about her growing up and relationship trials and tribulations, she always made sure to have fun and not take it too seriously. Whether it be from playful back and forth from her band or having fun jumping and screaming on her own, she was happy to be there, and her joy was contagious, filling the entire venue,

De Souza is not an artist to miss; Indigo wraps up her U.S. tour tomorrow at The Orange Peel with Sluice and will be playing a handful of festivals and international dates over the summer; she is an artist certainly not to be missed live.
