Smut Release Fresh New Singles ‘18 Tons' and ‘Y Signal'

Chicago based Smut have released two fresh new singles with ‘18 Tons’ and ‘Y Signal’ ahead of their upcoming tour dates with Citizen and Knifeplay. Both singles are featured as bonus tracks on the Japanese CD version of the bands 2022 debut album How The Light Felt.

The two singles are contrasting in atmosphere and lyrics but both exemplify the 90s influences — brit-pop, shoegaze, and trip-hop that fuse so satisfyingly on How The Light Felt. Continuing in the album’s themes of grief ‘18 Tons’ uses swirling synths and crackling drum samples to score dark, bargaining feelings “If I dance around questions, walk through walls // Start painting in blue // Just know that I’m trying”. ‘Y Signal’ is just as cathartic, opening with the marimba-like high tones of a synth ringing out, leading into a gentle anthem for avoidant personality types, sprinkling short fantasies of revenge and blame against a hopeful backdrop of sweeping synths.

Together the bonus tracks provide an exciting extension of Smut's diverse musical range, anchored by Roebuck’s ever-incisive songwriting.
